Splendid ceramic exhibit displays rich range of Tunisian artistic talent
Tunis , June 25, 2008 (TunisiaOnline)--The centre for art ceramic of Sidi Kacem Jelizi, located in the Tunis Medina, is hosting a splendid ceramic exhibit gathering the works of 75 artists and some 2500 creations. A real Ali Baba den of art objects of all forms and shapes, the exhibit remains faithful to the first artistic teachings of the Spanish renegade, Sidi Kacem Jelizi, who chose to make of his workshop and home, his mausoleum. Later, the mausoleum will be turned into an art centre, and will benefit from the influence of Islamic ceramic art.
If clay and enamel are particularly celebrated, the exhibit also displays the wide range of artistic talent of Tunisian art ceramists who have mastered the various techniques of enamelling and copper reflections by using manganese oxide, as well as copper oxide for their various creations.
Specialists will also find works inspired from Japan 's ‘Raku' technique which provides the works of art with small cracks and beautiful metal reflections.
The exhibit, which was inaugurated by the Minister of Culture and Heritage Preservation on June 19, is a must see for ceramic art lovers as well as art lovers ‘tout court'.
Thanks to the artist's power to transform the world, it reminds us of the lines of the great Persian poet, Ferdowsi often quoted by the Dean of Tunisian art ceramists Hedi Pacha, whose works are incidentally on display at the event, “It is through the mixture of fire and water, of wind and earth, that the dark face of the world is illuminated”.
