International media interest in President Ben Ali's initiative to contribute to UN World Solidarity Fund
Tunis , June 20, 2008 (TunisiaOnline)--The international press continues to show interest in President Ben Ali's initiative to contribute to the United Nations World Solidarity Fund for the Eradication of Poverty, by requesting oil- rich nations to allocate one dollar per oil barrel to the Fund, in order to curb the dangers posed by the world food crisis.
The Tunisian Head of State made the call in April 2008. He reiterated his call at the latest TICAD Conference held in Tokyo , and at the FAO World Summit, recently held in Rome . During a meeting of the general assembly in New York , UN Secretary General, Mr Ban Ki Moon, hailed the Tunisian initiative which he said “requires all our attention”.
The Swiss daily Le Temps , noed that among the marking events of the recent FAO World Food Summit, one can note President Ben Ali's initiative, as well as that of the Islamic Development Bank, to allocate a sum of money to fight against hunger and poverty in the world.
The Egyptian daily Al Ahram also underscores the fact that President Ben Ali's call aims at strengthening, international solidarity while setting up a solidarity- based partnership at a world scale.
On its part, the Lebanese journal Esharq published a feature paper under the title, “ Tunisia spreads the nobility of solidarity on a world scale”.
The newspapers Al Liwa from Lebanon , Al Hayat from Egypt and Al Arab from Qatar, also focused on the strong support given to President Ben Ali's initiative by the UN Secretary General , Mr Ban Ki Moon.
