Tunisian power company to set up electricity project in Rwanda

Tunis, July 3, 2008 (TunisiaOnline)--“STEG International Services”, a branch of the Tunisian national electricity and gas company STEG, will set up a pilot project in Rwanda shortly.

The project which was announced during a press conference held on Thursday by STEG's CEO, Mr Othman Ben Arfa, is financed by the World Bank and will bring electricity to 4000 households in a country where the electrification rate does not exceed 4,5%, he said.

It will necessitate investments of the order of 10 million dinars and will require the assistance of 20 Tunisian cadres, including 3 engineers, 17 qualified technicians, and 3 financial officers.

90% of the equipment is Tunisian, said Mr Ben Arfa, adding that 5 million dinars were earmarked for equipment alone.

A second more ambitious project is also afoot, whose budget will exceed 150 million dollars, and will be launched by 2009 within the framework of an international call for tender.

The project aims at electrifying 160,000 Rwandan households between 2009 and 2012.
